Quak Sim Hui's Career As A Tour Host

Into The Wild

‘As Tour Host, Singapore Zoo, I am in customer service. This includes delivering tours and attending to the needs and safety of our customers.’

Why This Line

‘I wanted to be a tour guide when I was a kid because I like meeting new people and cultural exchanges. What I am doing now is quite similar. I prefer it because I get to see animals everyday and share information about them with zoo visitors. I am very passionate about tourism. I specialized in it in school. I like to be on the move and I’m not the kind to sit in front of the computer all day. The environment attracted me as well – everyone here works as one big family.’

Job Challenges

‘Sometimes it’s hard to please every single guest. This is an outdoor park so when it rains, we try to pick up the guests, but the buggy can only ferry a certain number of people. Some guests get offended when we’re unable to give them a ride. We have to tell them priority is given to the elderly and babies.

WSQ Course in Attraction

‘The course I attended was about delivering tours, it helped me better understand how I can plan and prepare tours and how to execute plans to serve guests well. It has definitely helped me in my line of work.’

Job Highlights

‘I met the late Steve Irwin when he came to open the Australian Outback exhibit. He was the same in real life as he was on TV, you could feel his passion for animals. His demise came as a very sad shock to me.

What The Job Requires

‘You have to be able to take the sun and the rain. It’s very physically demanding because you have to be on your feet the whole day. I get great satisfaction from helping an animal. Once I was driving a buggy and saw a squirrel lying on the ground. I got vets to attend to it and its broken nose. When it was released the next day after treatment, I was happy for the whole month.’
