A Typical Atypical Day
‘I start off by welcoming guests, attend to ongoing events and see to last-minute requests from organisers. Throughout the day, I meet potential customers, answer telephone enquiries, draft proposals and agreements and plan for future events.’
‘Everyday is a learning experience. Every guest is different. There are always new things to discover and learn. Unusual requests are the norm and improved ways to treat people are always on our plate. Change is a constant in our business.

‘I attended a WSQ course – Interact With Guests. This taught us the importance of grooming and the appropriate way to respond to guests, I also learnt how to improve service standards and how to renew my skills on handling guests in real-life situations. For example, when a client blows his top, do not smile. Just apologise, try to solve his problem and calm him by making the necessary adjustments.
Advice For Conference Planners
‘Be open-minded. Don’t have set ideas about the job. Passion for what you do is crucial and so is a willingness to learn and the ability to adapt. The most crucial thing in your job is the trust that you will earn from your customer. When you have this, he will return.’
