Numa's Career As A Service Staff
A Menu Stuffed With Opportunity
As a fresh-faced 16-year old, Nurnashirawati part-timed as a waitress while pursuing her Diploma in Business Administration. After graduation, she chose the F&B line because she enjoyed the interaction.
Starting At The Start
‘As a service staff, I deliver tableside services to diners, prepare beverages and perform cashier duties. Sometimes I help out at the kitchen but prefer being at the dining area. If customers complain about the food, for example, I’ll explain to them politely and professionally why it is the way it appears. If needed, I’ll apologise and try to get a complimentary item for them.’
‘’I learnt a great deal from my seniors and colleagues – from the food of our menu to tips on professional service, patience, discipline and teamwork.’
WSQ Assessment
Recently I underwent an oral and practical assessment of my skills on F&B service. Besides officially recognizing the profession, the WSQ system motivates and encourages service providers to constantly raise the bar, which can only be good for the industry here.
F&B – A Place For Everyone
‘Age is not a problem in this sector. Most places welcome middle-aged applicants. Shy people may find it daunting to interact with diners at first. But practice makes perfect. I used to be very shy but the more I spoke to customers, the easier it became. I aim to become a manager in this industry.’
